Want to convert WHP to HP easily? Our WHP to HP Calculator helps you estimate your vehicle’s crank horsepower based on wheel horsepower and drivetrain type. Simply enter your WHP, select your drivetrain (RWD, FWD, or AWD), and get instant results.

This tool considers factors of drivetrain losses to provide an accurate HP estimate. Whether you’re tuning your car or comparing power figures, this calculator makes the process quick and hassle-free. Try it now and discover your engine’s true potential!

What Is WHP to HP?

WHP (Wheel Horsepower) and HP (Crank Horsepower) are two key measurements of a vehicle’s power output. WHP refers to the actual power delivered to the wheels, while HP represents the engine’s total power before drivetrain losses.

Since power is lost through the transmission, the drivetrain type significantly affects the conversion. Typically, RWD loses around 15%, FWD around 10%, and AWD up to 25%. To estimate HP from WHP, divide WHP by the drivetrain efficiency factor.

How to Calculate HP from WHP?

To convert Wheel Horsepower (WHP) to Crank Horsepower (HP), you need to account for drivetrain power losses. The formula is:

HP = WHP / (1−Drivetrain Loss Percentage)

Where:

  • WHP = Wheel Horsepower
  • Drivetrain Loss Percentage depends on the drivetrain type:
    • RWD: ~15% loss → (1 – 0.15) = 0.85
    • FWD: ~10% loss → (1 – 0.10) = 0.90
    • AWD: ~25% loss → (1 – 0.25) = 0.75

Example 1: RWD Car

A car has 300 WHP and uses a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) system:

HP = 300 / (1−0.15) = 300 / 0.85

= 352.94HP

Estimated Crank HP: ≈ 353 HP

Example 2: FWD Car

A car has 250 WHP and uses a Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) system:

HP = 250 / (1−0.10) = 250 / 0.90

= 277.78HP

Estimated Crank HP: ≈ 278 HP

Example 3: AWD Car

A car has 400 WHP and uses an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system:

HP = 400 / (1−0.20) = 400 / 0.80

= 500HP

Estimated Crank HP: 500 HP
