What is a Wheel Torque?

Wheel torque is the rotational force applied at the wheels of a vehicle. It determines how much power is transferred from the engine to the wheels after passing through the transmission and final drive system. Higher wheel torque results in greater acceleration and towing capacity.

Formula for Calculating Wheel Torque

The general formula for wheel torque is:

WT = ET × GR × FDR × TE/100

Where:

  • WT = Wheel Torque (Nm, lb-ft, kg-m)
  • ET = Engine Torque (Nm, lb-ft, kg-m)
  • GR = Gear Ratio (e.g., 2.5:1)
  • FDR = Final Drive Ratio (e.g., 3.73:1)
  • TE = Transmission Efficiency (%)

Engine Torque (ET):

This is the torque produced by the engine and measured at the crankshaft. It depends on engine size, fuel type, and tuning.

Gear Ratio (GR):

The gear ratio determines how much the torque is multiplied before reaching the wheels. A higher gear ratio increases torque but reduces speed.

Final Drive Ratio (FDR):

This ratio is found in the differential and further multiplies the torque before sending it to the wheels. A higher FDR means more torque but a lower top speed.

Transmission Efficiency (TE):

This represents power loss due to friction and mechanical inefficiencies. It varies based on the type of drivetrain:

Front-Wheel Drive (FWD): ~90% efficiency

Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): ~85% efficiency

All-wheel drive (AWD): ~80% efficiency

Example Calculation

Given Data:

  • Engine Torque (ET) = 200 Nm
  • Gear Ratio (GR) = 2.5:1
  • Final Drive Ratio (FDR) = 3.73:1
  • Transmission Efficiency (TE) = 90% (FWD vehicle)

Convert efficiency percentage:

90 / 100 = 0.90

Multiply the values:

WT = 200 × 2.5 × 3.73 × 0.90

Compute the result:

WT = 1678.5 Nm

Thus, the wheel torque is 1678.5 Nm.
