Formula to Calculate Drivetrain Loss (%):

Drivetrain Loss % = (Engine HP−WHP/Engine HP​) × 100

Where:

  • Engine HP = Horsepower at the crank (before drivetrain loss)
  • WHP = Horsepower at the wheels (after drivetrain loss)

Example 1: RWD Car (Rear-Wheel Drive)

  • Engine HP = 400 HP
  • WHP = 340 HP

Drivetrain Loss Calculation:

(400−340/400) × 100 = (60/400) × 100 = 15%

Result: 15% drivetrain loss (RWD typically has ~15% loss)

Example 2: FWD Car (Front-Wheel Drive)

  • Engine HP = 300 HP
  • WHP = 270 HP

Drivetrain Loss Calculation:

(300−270/300) × 100 = (30/300) × 100 = 10%
