Estimating your yearly gas expenses is not easy when doing manual calculations. Whether you’re planning a budget, comparing vehicles, or simply curious about your driving costs, this Annual Gas Cost Calculator makes it easy. By entering just a few details—like your yearly mileage, fuel efficiency, and local gas prices—you can get a quick and clear estimate of how much you spend on fuel each year.

It supports both miles and kilometers, as well as MPG and km/L, making it useful for drivers worldwide. This tool helps you make more informed decisions about your vehicle’s fuel efficiency.

How to Calculate Annual Gas Cost

To calculate annual gas cost, you need to know:

  1. How far you drive in a year (distance)
  2. Your vehicle’s fuel efficiency (how much gas it uses per unit of distance)
  3. The cost of gas per unit (usually per gallon or per liter)

Formula to Calculate Annual Gas Cost

If using miles and MPG (miles per gallon):

Annual Gas Cost = (Miles driven per year ÷ Vehicle MPG) × Cost per gallon

If using kilometers and km/L (kilometers per liter):

Annual Gas Cost = (Kilometers driven per year ÷ Vehicle km/L) × Cost per liter

Here:

  • Miles driven per year / Kilometers driven per year: Total distance you drive in a year.
  • Vehicle MPG / km/L: Measures how far your car goes with one gallon or one liter of gas.
  • Cost per gallon or per liter: The price you pay at the gas station.

Example 1: Using Miles and MPG

Let’s say:

  • You drive 12,000 miles per year
  • Your car’s fuel efficiency is 25 MPG
  • Gas costs $3.50 per gallon

Calculation:

  1. Calculate gallons used per year:

12,000 miles ÷ 25 MPG = 480 gallons

Calculate total cost:

480 gallons × $3.50 = $1,680

Result: You spend $1,680 on gas annually.

Example 2: Using Kilometers and km/L

Let’s say:

  • You drive 20,000 km per year
  • Your car’s fuel efficiency is 12 km/L
  • Gas costs $1.60 per liter

Calculate liters used per year:

20,000 km ÷ 12 km/L = 1,666.67 liters

Calculate total cost:

1,666.67 liters × $1.60 = $2,666.67

Result: You spend $2,666.67 on gas annually.
