How Much Weight Can Plywood Hold?
Plywood consists of thin layers of wood, known as plies, that are bonded together with glue.
A single layer of plywood is not particularly strong and cannot support heavy weights very well.
The weight plywood can hold depends on several factors, including its thickness, grade, type, and how it is supported.
Here’s a general guideline for common plywood thicknesses:
- 1/4-inch plywood: 1/4 or 0.25-inch plywood typically holds up to 5 pounds per square foot when supported properly.
- 1/2-inch plywood: Generally supports up to 35 pounds per square foot.
- 3/4-inch plywood: Usually this plywood can tolerate up to 50 pounds per square foot.
- 1 Inch: One-inch plywood is considered a heavy thickness that can hold up to 164 pounds per square foot.
These values might differ based on the type of plywood, its thickness, or other variables.

How Does This Calculator Work?
This calculator is easy to use as it contains default sizes of plywood.
You can enter thickness in millimeters, centimeters, or inches by selecting the appropriate unit from the dropdown menu.
The calculator uses the following formula:
LC = L * W * MP
Here,
- L is the length of the plywood sheet
- W is the width of the plywood sheet
- MP is the maximum pressure based on thickness
- & LC stands for load capacity

Thickness = 12 mm → 12 ÷ 25.4
≈ 0.472 in → maxPressure = 6 kg/ft²
Load capacity = 4.92 × 3.28 × 6 ≈ 96.88 kg
