Belt Speed Calculator
Disclaimer: While we strive to ensure the accuracy of our calculator tools, we cannot be held responsible for any damages or financial losses resulting from their use.
This Belt Speed Calculator is designed to quickly determine the speed of a belt based on its pulley diameter and RPM. Whether you’re working on a motor drive system, conveyor setup, or workshop machinery, this calculator helps you get accurate speed values in seconds. Instead of manually applying formulas and converting units, you can enter your values and instantly see results in multiple speed units like m/s, km/h, mph, and FPM.
How to Calculate Belt Speed
Belt speed is the linear speed at which a belt travels over a pulley. It depends on two main factors: pulley diameter (D) and rotational speed (RPM).
Standard Belt Speed Formula (Metric)
Formula:
Where:
- V = Belt Speed (meters per second, m/s)
- D = Pulley Diameter (in meters)
- N = Rotational Speed (RPM)
- π ≈ 3.1416
- 60 = Converts minutes to seconds
If Diameter is in Millimeters
(1000 converts millimeters into meters.)
Example Calculation (Metric)
Suppose:
- Pulley Diameter (D) = 200 mm
- Speed (N) = 1000 RPM
Step 1: Apply formula
Step 2: Solve
Belt Speed ≈ 10.47 meters per second
Belt Speed in Feet per Minute (FPM)
If diameter is in inches:
(12 converts inches into feet. Result is in Feet per Minute.)
Important Notes
- Belt speed is the same for both small and large pulleys (assuming no slip).
- You can use either pulley diameter if you know its RPM.
- Make sure units are consistent before calculating.
