This RPM to Feet Per Minute calculator makes it easy to understand how fast a surface is actually moving, not just how fast it’s spinning. Instead of manually working through formulas, you can enter your values and see the real-world speed instantly. It’s especially useful when you’re setting up machines, adjusting cutting speeds, or checking belt and roller performance. The simple layout keeps things clear, so you can focus on your work instead of the math. Whether you’re in a workshop, factory, or classroom, this tool helps you calculate with confidence and move forward quickly.

How to Convert RPM to Feet Per Minute (FPM)

To convert RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) into Feet Per Minute (FPM), we calculate how far the outer edge of a rotating object travels in one minute. This depends on the circumference of the object.

Step 1: Find the Circumference

The circumference of a circle is calculated using:

Circumference = π × Diameter

If the diameter is given in inches, convert it to feet by dividing by 12.

Step 2: Multiply by RPM

Once you have the circumference in feet, multiply it by RPM:

FPM = π × Diameter (in feet) × RPM

Formula (When Diameter is in Inches)

FPM = (π × Diameter × RPM) ÷ 12

Since π ≈ 3.1416, you can also use:

FPM = (3.1416 × D × RPM) ÷ 12

Example 1

RPM = 1000
Diameter = 6 inches

FPM = (3.1416 × 6 × 1000) ÷ 12

FPM = 1570.8 ft/min

Example 2

RPM = 500
Diameter = 12 inches

FPM = (3.1416 × 12 × 500) ÷ 12

FPM = 1570.8 ft/min

Quick Shortcut Formula

If diameter is in inches, you can use this simplified version:

FPM = 0.262 × Diameter × RPM

This shortcut works because 3.1416 ÷ 12 ≈ 0.262.

RPM to FPM Reference Table

RPM Diameter (Inch) Feet Per Minute (FPM)
500 4 523.6
750 6 1178.1
1000 6 1570.8
1200 8 2513.3
1500 10 3927.0

Values calculated using: FPM = (3.1416 × Diameter × RPM) ÷ 12
