This Tip Speed Calculator helps you quickly determine the linear speed at the outer edge of a rotating impeller. By entering the impeller diameter and rotational speed (RPM), you can calculate the tip speed with high accuracy instantly. The tool supports multiple diameter units and displays results in several common velocity units for easy comparison.

This calculator is useful for engineers, pump designers, and maintenance professionals.

How to Calculate Tip Speed

Tip speed is the linear (tangential) velocity at the outer edge of a rotating impeller. It tells how fast the impeller tip is moving through the fluid and is an important parameter in pump, mixer, and turbine design.

Tip Speed Formula

The standard formula used to calculate tip speed is:

Tip Speed = (π × D × RPM) ÷ 60

  • π (Pi) ≈ 3.1416
  • D = Impeller diameter (in meters)
  • RPM = Revolutions per minute
  • 60 = Conversion factor from minutes to seconds

Step-by-Step Calculation

  1. Measure the impeller diameter.
  2. Convert the diameter to meters if required.
  3. Note the rotational speed in RPM.
  4. Insert the values into the formula.
  5. Calculate the result to get tip speed in m/s.

Example 1

Suppose an impeller has:

  • Diameter = 0.5 m
  • Speed = 900 RPM

Tip Speed = (3.1416 × 0.5 × 900) ÷ 60

Tip Speed = 23.56 m/s

Example 2

An impeller with a diameter of 30 cm rotates at 1200 RPM.

First convert diameter to meters:

30 cm = 0.30 m

Tip Speed = (3.1416 × 0.30 × 1200) ÷ 60 = 18.85 m/s

Example 3

An impeller diameter is 1.2 ft and speed is 600 RPM.

Convert diameter to meters:

1.2 ft = 0.366 m

Tip Speed = (3.1416 × 0.366 × 600) ÷ 60 = 11.50 m/s

Sample Tip Speed Values

Diameter (m) RPM Tip Speed (m/s) Tip Speed (ft/s)
0.25 600 7.85 25.8
0.40 900 18.85 61.8
0.50 1200 31.42 103.1
0.75 800 31.42 103.1

These examples and values help visualize how increasing either the impeller diameter or the rotational speed directly increases the tip speed.

Converting Tip Speed to Other Units

  • Feet per second: m/s × 3.28084
  • Kilometers per hour: m/s × 3.6
